SWAET 2016 took place in Turku

The 7th Scandinavian Workshop on Eye Tracking was kept in Turku from 19.6-21.6.2016. Altogether 95 persons from 16 different countries participated, of which 38 give a platform and 14 a poster presentation. The topics of the presentations included eye movements in instructional settings, traffic behavior, social contexts, visual search, visual expertise, special populations, reading comprehension, language production, translation performance, digital reading, sight reading as well as some sessions on eye movements and methodology. During the workshop the participants could test the newest products of the eye tracker exhibitors (SMI, Tobii, SR Research). One of the social highlights was the sauna event in combination with the conference dinner in the beautiful archipelago around Turku.

Among the scientific highlights were the excellent keynote addresses from the invited speakers.

Dr. Halszka Jarodzka from the Welten Institute for Learning, Teaching and Technology in Heerlen (Netherlands) outlined the work that has been done within 3 different areas of educational psychology: instructional designs, visual expertise, and eye movement modeling examples and also she sketched the research agenda for the future in this field.

Prof. Simon Liversedge from the University of Southampton gave a comprehensive overview on the major research achievements and eye tracking paradigms within the field of reading comprehension.

The concluding panel discussion summarized the highlights of the workshop and discussed the fields of research in which eye movements could be applied to a greater extent (education, humanities). It also was decided during this discussion that SWAET will be kept once in two years (every even year) in one of the Nordic ‘eye movement’ cities (Lund, Stockholm, Turku). Besides that, it will be occasionally kept in combination with more local conferences (2017, Kazimierz Dolny, Poland).

We once more like to thank all the participants, sponsors and volunteers to make this event to a great success!

On behalf of the organizing committee,
Raymond Bertram (chairman)
